Writing, Editing, and Coaching
I offer a range of services including my own writing, collaborative writing, and supporting your writing through editing, coaching, and retreats
Writing
I’ve been writing for 30 years professionally. I’ve written about my own research in music psychology and education, contributing millions of words in nearly 70 published and peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and books. I’m currently working on a book about travelling musicians. I now write about lifestyle, health, travel, music, and the science of happiness and wellbeing and how it applies to everyday life.
I can write your story. Ghostwriting brings together my writing skills with my research expertise—I’ve been drawing out what matters to people and telling their stories throughout my research career, and am a skilled investigator who loves to get beyond the details to craft a compelling narrative.
I can also write with you and help fill in the blanks. I’ve co-written over 30 academic articles on different topics including children’s concentration during TV watching and whether music is better than knitting, as well as an academic book about musical development published by Cambridge University Press.
My academic profile has been under my maiden name, Alexandra Lamont, whereas I’m now writing in my married name, Alexandra King.

Editing and Proofreading
“A very proficient editor … detail oriented, enjoyable to work with, responsive”
I’m a native English speaker with a PhD in Education, 32 years of experience in academic and technical writing for assignments, theses, reports, scientific journals and books, 9 years as an Editor in Chief of an academic journal published by SAGE, and 2 years freelance experience for international clients in research, education, psychology and psychotherapy, memoir, and self-help.
I offer developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading. I can help at every stage of your work from ideas to finished product, guiding you through developing outlines, plans, structure, organisations, and giving feedback throughout. I polish your final products through high quality editorial support for all kinds of writing, including essays, presentations, papers, dissertations, non-fiction, and fiction and memoirs dealing with the big human issues such as love, loss, memory, relationships, and journeys of self-discovery. You can expect meticulous attention to detail and clear timeframes.

Writing Coaching
“masterful at supporting progress … persistent in acknowledging the need for balance … genuinely constructive feedback”
My key ingredients as a coach are consistent input, sensitive feedback, and firm encouragement. I have trained thousands of students in how to present arguments convincingly, to beat procrastination and writers’ block, and to organise, plan, and review large writing projects. I can coach and motivate you through your writing project, however big or small. I can also be your book doctor if you need help after writing to do your ideas justice.
I work with you in a tailored manner to support your writing, according to your own needs, timetable and challenges. This can be a one-off review or a regular series of meetings to hold you accountable and keep you on track. This highly personalised service is delivered online.

Writing Retreats
It’s often hard to find time to get writing projects done when you’re embroiled in the clutter of everyday life. A writing retreat can provide the focus, space, and inspiration you need for making progress with your writing.
I curate bespoke retreats for academics and authors wanting a beautiful rural riverside location, accountability and structure to their days, and a supportive environment to help you write. Retreats take place in spring, autumn, and winter, and can be tailored to provide dedicated writing time and support and a range of other activities to boost your wellbeing.
Come and focus for 5 nights and 4 full working days, with all accommodation and meals included. Next available dates in June, September, and October.

Alexandra was masterful at supporting my progress by working with me to set achievable deadlines, persistent in acknowledging the need for balance, and has a brilliant way of being able to see the bigger picture but zone into the details, leading to genuinely constructive feedback which helped me to weave complex details together into a coherent narrative.
