Professor Alexandra King (Alexandra Lamont)
I trained at the University of Cambridge (BA Hons, Music, 1991; PhD, Education, 1998) and City University, London (MA Music Psychology, 1992), and worked for 30 years teaching and researching in the disciplines of music, education, and psychology. In my last academic position as Professor of Music Psychology at Keele University, I was also the first Director of the Doctoral Academy, looking after the doctoral students across the whole University. I am still involved in the academic community, holding an honorary professorship at the University of Queensland School of Music and an editorial board role for the journal Research Studies in Music Education.

Current research activities and services
I’m currently writing up the results of projects completed since the start of the pandemic, including one paper on how a deaf participant can sense musical pitch through physical vibrations and another on how people feel about donating their unwanted musical instruments. I also have a new book project in development – watch this space for more news!
I recently helped to organise a SEMPRE research conference on Intersections between music psychology and education in Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music (9-10 April 2025). With my fantastic colleagues, we brought together over 100 researchers in this field to experience 2 packed days of cutting-edge research.
I offer flexible research consultancy. I have a very broad range of research skills including quantitative and qualitative approaches, and have undertaken numerous evaluation projects in music, education, and child development as well as my own research with children, young people and adults on everyday experiences of music and the importance of music in people’s lives. To find out more please contact me.
I also offer training in academic and related skills such as writing papers, time management, giving effective presentations, dealing with supervision, and career development at all stages. The final string to my bow is a range of editing and proof-reading services.
