Do you play street pianos?

I’m looking for people who play pianos in stations, shopping centres, airports, motorway service stations, or outdoors for a new book project.

The project

This is a new and exciting project I’m currently working on about travelling musicians. I want to know about why people play street pianos. Tell me more about your story!

Why do you play? What motivates you to play in public? Are you playing for an audience, or yourself? How often do you play, and what stops you?

If this sounds like something interesting, please get in touch!

What do I need?

Research typically involves talking to people who have a certain experience or background and finding out more about their stories.

For this project, which I hope will turn into a book, I’m interested in talking to the people who play street pianos. We’ll do an interview of around 30 minutes at a time that suits you, and talk on the phone or Zoom or Google as you prefer.

You don’t have to share your name or your image if you choose not to, but I am also keen to include pictures of people playing pianos in public.

Who am I?

I’m a former professor of music psychology, and have been carrying out research and writing about music-related projects for over 30 years. I’m interested in what motivates people with music. I also play the piano, violin, cello, and drums, and until this project started, I had never played a street piano myself. But I love walking through a station or an airport and hearing someone play.

You can read more about my former research in music psychology and education.
